Subject: exciting changes in Sports
You've heard us talk about plans to expand and improve IndyStar Sports. We're excited to announce the initial steps we're taking to further build on our position as the premier destination for sports coverage in Indiana.
We're working to create a new kind of experience for sports fans in our market – adding resources and offering new digital products. These moves will help us continue to evolve as Central Indiana's leading media company and to respond to the many ways that fans consume sports news through mobile devices, tablets and computers. The changes also will create new opportunities for advertisers.
Among the products and enhancements you'll see will be a weekly online sports show, a digital magazine for online subscribers and expanded recruiting coverage.
We've also made some changes with our Sports staff, allowing us to showcase our expertise and talent more effectively and in new ways. The changes position us to provide the great coverage and exclusive content we'll need for the re-launch of IndyStar Sports.
·         Mike Wells will join Mike Chappell on the Colts beat and become the lead writer.
·         Phil B. Wilson will move into a new role as a video journalist and focus on becoming the online host of our sports coverage.
·         Terry Hutchens will lead our expanded new efforts on recruiting, focusing primarily on college basketball.
·         David Woods will help with pro teams to enhance our coverage there while continuing to track Olympic sports and the Fever.
·         Zak Keefer will cover Butler basketball and work as a digital general assignment reporter in the off-season.
·         Phil Richards has shifted into a new role focused on Sunday takeouts, allowing him to flash his writing talents across the sports spectrum.
We will be hiring, too — expanding our existing staff. We'll seek a Pacers beat writer and an IU writer who will be based in Bloomington. Look for those job postings soon (along with a posting for a new writer in entertainment). Meantime, we're exploring how we can enhance coverage of other colleges, including Purdue, and high schools.
The sports initiative is an important step forward for us and reflects the kind of innovation we'll pursue in other parts of our news operation — and in everything we do.
Thanks for all your good work. We can't wait to see what comes from our new-look IndyStar Sports team.
Jeff, Kevin and Ronnie
