Some insights on the Star sports desk musical chairs

Dateline: Thu 27 Jun 2013

Anthony Schoettle of the Indianapolis Business Journal broke this story today on his blog, regarding the Star's new lineup in its sports department.

The most interesting portion of the article are the last few graphs, quoting Terry Hutchens, who covered Indiana University sports. Here's what Schoettle says:

"Of course, not everyone involved is happy about the changes.

“It has been a long couple of days here but I think it’s time to share with you, my friends, the shakeup this week in theIndianapolis Star Sports Department,” (Terry) Hutchens wrote on his Facebook page. “Bottom line for me: As of Monday, I am no longer the Indiana University beat writer for The Star. After 15 years on the beat, I was informed that management has decided to go another direction."

Hutchens called the reorganization “a blow to a lot of good people who have done some great work as the top guys on their respective beats.”

“I’m not really sure what to say and in trying to take the high road through all of this I’ll continue to keep my deepest feelings to myself,” Hutchens wrote. “To say I'm disappointed would be a huge understatement though.”

It’s safe to say Hutchens is not alone."

One observer, who formerly worked for the Star/News, says it's understood that everyone over the age of 60 in the deparment received bad performance reviews. Ageism is alive and well at the newspaper. But then, that's not exactly news, is it?

Journalism is no longer a gig for the old. Or even for the young and smart who expect to grow old in it. Like any factory, the newspaper wants Young & Cheap.

At least they still have their jobs, albeit different beats. Can't say the same for me. I was laid off from The Star not too long ago.
