Heard you were Pope...

Yay rah God!"

That ditty won a New York magazine greeting card contest years ago. Now we can trot it out possibly as early as March, when the conclave in Rome may meet to start the process of choosing a new pontiff.

From what I gather, Catholics all over the world, including gossipy Rome, were caught by surprise at the announcment from B16, as a journalist calls him. (that's the acronym for Benedict XVI, But you knew that.). A local Northside priest who spent time this summer in the heavenly city said there was no buzz at all about ill health, a pending resignation, etc. Just whammo, total shock and awe.

I blame Twitter and social media for speed-dialing the Pope's time in office. And, after all, he is 85.

I hope he's well. I hope his replacement does well. She has a big job to do.

So, Joseph gave God two weeks' notice. Does Joe have a golden parachute?

The Star's USA Today story has some deeper "insight" -- trouble walking, fear of falling, did not want to go thru what JP did. Makes sense. Gotta give him creds for the humility to step down.

There is humility; JP2 was revered and like him or not, he helped bring down the Iron Curtain with Ronald Reagan's deep pockets. He was ecumenical to a fault. B16 is no JP2, and the adulation would be misplaced. I'm sorry for B16's frailty; I think he tried to do a good job in the footsteps of a tremendous leader. Tough act to follow. I can only hope for improvements.

Wonder if QEII will consider doing likewise. But then, there is Charles (and Camilla).
