Speaking of (dykes)

did everyone read Will Higgins' story in the Living section last week on the two lesbians who run Fruit Loop Acres on the city's Eastside?

More stories like this, please:

First, the piece is very well-written, as everything by Higgins is; he has the light touch, and his unique voice comes through loud and clear. Plus, he's funny.

But the subject matter was happy-making: on a street a couple blocks south of the notorious Hamilton Street murders of 2006 (which is never mentioned by Higgins), two women are raising fruit and nourishing bees, ducks, doll heads and doll torsos (which hang from the trees).  Oh, and the pair are also recycling their urine for compost. Way to go, girls! Not so much the doing, but the publicizing....("If it's yellow, it's mellow" was a 60s mantra that glorified simple living).

More importantly, these women also have bought up empty lots on the Near Eastside -- a "hardscrabble neighborhood," Higgins says -- and that's where their gardens grow.

One of the top guys at Midland Arts & Antiques Downtown has done the same thing in his 10th and Arsenal neighborhood. We all know there are plenty more projects/urban gardeners like this, because the Star or Indianapolis Business Journal write the occasional feature/biz story about their efforts.

Chickens, ducks, bees, a sunflower made of an old Venetian blind -- everything has a purpose. Nice to read about it in the paper.

Hey, these are the type of people who wage war, creatively, against the overall current cultural blandness of Indianapolis. Salt of the Earth. You go, gals! :)

Just FYI, I'm pretty sure female gays think the "dyke" term is not flattering. But I could be wrong.
