His 'Summer as a Cub'

Dateline: Thu 13 Oct 2011

Former Indianapolis Star sports writer and author R. Rathbone Leonard has a new book out, "My Summer As A Cub," a novel about Leonard's beloved Chicago Cubbies.

As with much about the Cubs, it's pure fantasy. Here's a blurb from the author:

"Len 'Casey' Puddock is the hero of the 2011 Cubs...He's a former Indianapolis softball star who was so outstanding in fantasy camp that the Cubs signed him to a Minor League contract....By mid-season, he blasted his way to The Show. He posted Rookie of the Year numbers in leading the team to the World Series championship."

Leonard has been a Cubs observer since 1938. Writing the book was the only way he was ever going to see a championship, since the Cubs have not won the World Series for 103 years.

"No one alive has seen the Cubs win the World Series," he explains. "At least five generations of Cubs fans have not" seen victory.  But by reading the book, diehards can at least enjoy the idea.

Leonard has several book signings coming up.

He will be at O'Malia's (Marsh) Grocery Downtown Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Central Library Book/Authors Fair Oct. 29 and at the Indiana Historical Society's Bookfest Dec. 3. His book is published by AuthorHouse.

Leonard has been under the weather recently and was in the hospital last week for three days. He's out and about now, and on the mend.
