Other Star-related news

Dateline: Thu 23 Jun 2011

Jeff Rabjohns, who covered the business of sports for the Indianapolis Star, has left or is in the process of exiting the newspaper. His departure has nothing to do with layoffs. Seeking comment on his plans.

Epha Riche was among the casulaties of the layoffs; she was an editor and dedicated mom who handled conversations and interactions on the website Moms Like Me, a Gannett national creation that started out as the local IndyMoms, then expanded. Jennifer Gombach, who was in marketing and also worked on the Moms site, is still at the paper but no longer with Moms.

Features reporter T.J. Banes is trying to put a cheery face on her new assignment as the site administrator (moderator/boss mama) for Moms Like Me, but a quick read of the dialogue (comments on the site) shows many of the blog's longtime readership are not buying it.

"Site administrator?  What happened to Epha and Jennifer, if I may ask?" is typical of the tone, altho many of the readers are going more into Tiger Mom mode.

Here's an example of asking the tough questions:

"No offense, but I think most long time members would like an answer about where Epha and Jennifer are now.  I haven't been around myself for a while as I have not liked the direction the site has been going.  I am seeing concern on FB from many of my long-time IndyMoms friends and wondering what is up over here?  Many of us miss the way the site was a couple of years ago before it went so "corporate.""

So T.J. has to prove her worth, which she did years ago, in my book....not fair, not fair, not fair.

Also, the biggest loss for the paper, say some, is the copy desk slaughter. Exex editor Dennis Ryerson noted at a 4 p.m. newsroom meeting yesterday that the paper had lost its second set of eyes -- meaning copy editors. The burden, he said, is on every reporter to be accurate, fair and gramatically correct.

Hey, Gannett, but you can't run a paper like that....maybe best to start making widgets now, and get out of the news biz.

Those "mommy blogs" brought in $1 million a year in revenue and about a 50% margin until corporate took them over. That's a lot of IC salaries.

Hell they lost effective copy editors long ago. Each day has been a Strunk & White nightmare for a couple of years now.

Ugh.

Misplaced commas? Least of their errors. And their headline writers (it used to be copy editors--who does it recently) need to be stoned to death.

Well, not really, but you get my point...

To demonstrate the editing thing, this from a post placed on Indystar.com just awhile ago:

"..Scott Coxey, who worked for Eli Lilly and Co., will run in District 23 against Republican incumbent Susie Day and Frank Mascari, owner of Spaulding Jewelry, will run in District 20 against Republican incumbent Susie Day."

Evidently Susie Day, who's barely qualified to serve in one district (don't get me started) is now serving TWO districts.

Geeeesh.

Jennifer, well said. You have my respect, for what that is worth. Thank you for clarifying.
You make a valid point about INtake as it relates to Indy Moms. I am not a young mom, so I did not avail myself of Indy Moms, but I know how successful it was based on the fierce loyalty of readers.
You are a true professional, in a field that really does not have many professionals: those with a profession to a set of ethics, standards and goals. Good luck, take care.

A post script: I will read the paper until I die. And that means, I will subscribe. Better or worse, like a marriage...

Hey Robert Knilands... why don't you join Vladtheimpaler for a walk down the Monon?

The least you could do is have a little sympathy and some kind words for someone about to lose her job.

Jennifer, you have my sympathies.

Ruth, I, too, will get the paper 'til it -- or I -- ain't no more.

Seems you have a history of bad behavior, RK: http://davisullblog.blogspot.com/2010/05/why-robert-knilands-is-partly-right.html

I've put my name and face on more opinions than you can shake a stick at. Just because I choose an avatar here doesn't mean a lot of people on this site don't know who I am. And now I'm glad YOU don't. Have a nice day.

You're just a mean person, aren't you RK? I'm in too bad a mood about what happened at the Star this week to get in an even worse mood by engaging with a name-caller. Goodbye.
