More at the Star jobless

Dateline: Wed 16 Feb 2011

Two sources have noted that the Indianapolis Star is going through another big shakeup.

This time the newsroom is untouched, but other departments are affected, including those who worked for custom publications and other departments in the building.

Here are some particulars, with empathy for those out in the cold.

Eight people (or more, less?) got their walking papers on the 4th floor including Pat Palko who had been there 30 years.  Pat was an administrative assistant most recently. She also worked in classified at one point -- at a time when employees did not use real names when ads were placed. They were all "Mrs. White."

Also out: Lanard Stratford who worked for Bill Bolger; Stratford was there about 8 years.

Business office eliminated Teresa Schultz  - she had been there 15 years.

The art staff/custom pubs people included two let go. One was Tom Dreesen, who had been there a number of years.

David Cutsinger in advertising was promoted to retail advertising manager - a position they eliminated two years ago, and have now brought back.

Also, a manager who was paid to move here from Californiawas offed after being there for only a year in that position.

The pattern appears to be letting people go -- firing them -- at a rate of one or two per day, because it causes less consternation, or so the G-people believe.

There is more about this on Gannett Blog, and more info tk here....

Noticed this past weekend that their website was barely being updated. I looked at it both Sat and Sun around 8pm and the last update was before 2pm. Wonder if they have pulled their weekend help off the website? It's a really negative reflection on the Star when sites like Huffington Post update constantly even on weekends.

If you are losing money, and have no strategy for success, how do you not let people go?

Don't think for a minute that the Star is losing money. It's just not making enough.

I think the Star is making enough money for shareholders, just not for the workers.
Right on re: the weekend updates; they recently advertised for a person to update the website on weekends -- part time flunky position. Obviously not filled.

Others were: Sandy McKalip, Marketing, who had been with The Star for more than 30 years and Bonnie Piconne (sp) from Classifieds. Another from Custom Pubs was Phil Miller.
