Layoff clarifications, correction

Dateline: Wed 16 Feb 2011

From a source:

Nine people were let go 2 1/2 weeks ago at the Indianapolis Star.

This includes Pat Palko, an administrative assistant and 30-year employee, and LaNard Stradford (not Statford, as I originally published). Stradford worked in the mailroom.

Also offed were two from the circulation department. If anyone has names, fire away.

Another round of layoffs took place Tuesday. This time they got a machinist, pressman and Chris Cross (all at the Pulliam Production Center) and a woman who worked in advertising.

As they said in Vietnam, "sorry 'bout that."  Grim humor for grim times.

Is this why they got a new publisher? Someone detached to do the dirty work?

I wonder what the total headcount is now. Newsroom?

Gotta be a lot of empty space to rattle around in. What did they do with the pressroom when they moved the presses? I haven't been in the building in 9 years, and it is a sprawling layout, lot of squarefeets...lots to heat and cool and maintain. Echoes and emptiness and gloom&doom, I would think, the pall of despair and failure hanging in every corner. How depressing it must be to go to work, poor things.
