Did John Mellencamp buy my ashtray?

Dateline: Fri 11 Jun 2010

"Who's the guy who did 'Little Pink Houses' yelled one of the honchos at Midland Arts & Antiques, located in the near Downtown area, at 907 E. Michigan Avenue.

"John Cougar Mellencamp," someone shouted.

"Yeah," said the boss man. "Mellenkamp came in last week with his wife and they bought (five figures) worth of stuff."

Seems like John and family are helping to revive the Marion County economy. In addition to buying from us poor struggling Midland artiste types, the rock-and-roll-glamour couple who are Pure Corn have purchased a condo at the former Athletic Club. So you all can do Mellencamp spottings now.

A pummel horse was among their purchases. Not my pummel horse, but it belonged to someone, and John bought it.

And my ashtray? If he was the lucky consumer, he got such a deal....it was a little pottery number with a bird's egg blue glaze, engraved with JAPAN, and it was sweet vintage. I think I had $3 on it.

W00-hoo. Little blue ashtrays...

Mellenkamp is so special. Can't you just figure him and his using your lovely ashtray, Ruth? What shade blue?

Sort of the color of a robin's egg. Never used, or so it appeared.
May he and his family enjoy many such excursions. A friend told me Bruce Springsteen and his wife are also fond of shopping for antiques and vintage.

My niece has a fond memory of him. Her family lived down the road a piece from his recording studio in the 80's. He showed up at a Brown County football game while she was manning the refreshment booth. She gave him a Reese's peanut butter cup.
