Backyard Birds

Dateline: Sat 05 Jun 2010

Want to join me in doing penance for all the birds killed and injured in the Gulf, the "gift" from BP that keeps on giving?

Do you recall when the Chinese had a bird-flu scare, and they plowed millions of sometimes still-living chickens into mass graves, burying them? The Buddhist monks of that country eventually released millions of fish into the ocean, in an effort to restore balance to the life cycle. A nice gesture, not entirely empty.

If that works for you, come to Backyard Birds at the Broad Ripple Farmers' Market this morning -- we are there from 7:30 to 12:30, selling bird food and other items for animals....

Maybe you can't save one pelican here in Indiana, but you can feed the hummingbirds, etc. Even squirrels have to eat.

Before this is over, BP will be kaput.

The global impact on wildlife and economies will be profound. The cost of cleanup and restoration- so far as it can actually be accomplished, including restoration of wildlife including bird rookeries- will be astronomical. Some fish and bird species may not rebound.

Torches and pitchforks may be coming for BP execs, particularly the CEO who has performed without distinction.

Unfortunately this event is also going to spike the price of petrol something fierce.

I just hope that BP's checkbook remains intact long enough to pay for some of the damages. A pox on their houses.

Today I'm in NOLA. No tarballs on the shores, yet. They're coming and there's a lot of nervousness and angst here. Instead of a shimp po boy, I had a cheese omelette po boy.

My brand of Buddhism says: stop sucking oil out of the earth and learn how to use energy more efficiently with an accent on solar and even nuclear. But I digress.

A pox, I agree.
Hendy, my heart goes out to NOLA. It never seems to end for the Big Easy, and now it's way beyond the scope of anything we could have imagined (in our worst nightmares).
We need to digress.

Nice post Ruthie dear. Backyard birds are God's reminder that civilized society only borrows this green earth for the time we're on it.

And speaking of birds--aren't we about ready to flip one to British Petroleum ? They've cleverly disguised their company's moniker and home's a foreign company, heir to the original Iranian-based Royal Petrol Co., which the colonizing Brits stole from the people who rightfully owned the oil and its riches.

no wonder the Arab world hates westerners. We pillage and plunder, and take....

Until this dreadful crisis is over I refuse to call it BP. It's BRITISH Petroleum. As if they'd EVER let us forget it if the shoes were reversed.
