I am stealing this from Eve Tushnet's blog

who borrowed it from

which is why nobody will ever convince me that the Interweb should be anything but free.

Here 'tis, titled "Raison d'etre, #1 in a series":

“one of my favorite moments in Star Trek, when Captain Kirk looks over the cosmos and says, “Somewhere out there someone is saying the three most beautiful words in any language.” Of course you heart sinks and you think it’s going to be, “I love you” or whatever. He says, “Please help me.”  What a philosophically fantastic idea, that vulnerability and need is a beautiful thing.”

And I know you would make a powerful advocate on the side of the web staying free, Ruth. Have a great week.

I didn't think it was free. The cable company gets their pound of flesh each month. I just hope Obama doesn't get his wish for an 'off switch' installed in the white house.

I'm OK with paying to use it. I just don't want any politician having the power to disconnect it (particularly on nothing but personal whim) for up to 6 months at a stretch.
