Isabel Boyer Lacivita

Dateline: Thu 29 Apr 2010

The former "church editor" at the Indianapolis Star, Isabel Boyer Lacivita, now 90 years old, suffered a stroke a month or so ago. She is doing well, say friends, and she is undergoing physical therapy.

Isabel wrote under the name Isabel Boyer. For many years, she had the all-important religion beat, but back then, the Star called it "the church page." In a remarkable display of chauvinism, The Star's male editors expected her to write stories and shorts for the Saturday "church page" -- filling it up -- and answer the phones on the city desk. She did it all.

I was lucky enough to get her job when she retired. She was kind and patient and always of good humor with me when she trained me. We did rename the pages "Religion" so we could include faiths other than Christian, which of course is what "church pages" implied. I believe she retired in the mid 1980s.

If you want to send  her a card, here is the address of the rehab center:

Brownsburg Nursing & Rehab Center, Room 102, 1010 Hornaday Road, Brownsburg, Ind. 46112

She is well enough that she "periodically goes home for 3-4 hours at a time," which is good news. Which is what "Izzy" specialized in.
