John Bigelow graveside services

Dateline: Thu 19 Nov 2009

Services for John will be at 11 a.m. Monday Nov. 23 at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.

He died Oct. 28 at Wishard Memorial Hospital.

The Indianapolis Guild and the Star's library employees were especially supportive of John's family following the tragedy in their lives. The Star (at its best) resembles a loyal family....and this would be a good time for those of us who remember John in better days to pay our respects, if at all possible, and support Kelsey and Nick, the children of Marianne and John.

If you need directions to Forest Lawn, just go to Google and look it up; I'll have more info on this over the weekend.

My prayer is that John finds the peace on the other side that had eluded him here. (I have two illustrations he made for me when I graduated from college and when I left for DC.)

I'm with you. One friend said, "John always had a dream of inventing a machine that defied gravity....well, if he gets to heaven, I'd say he defied gravity."
I have one illustration he did, and when I picked it up at his home, I got to meet his family....adorable children and a lovely wife. That was back in the early 1980s or so....

John was special.

Back when I launched what turned out to be four quilt contests for The Star, he was enlisted to design some of the blocks. His designs for the Indiana state bird (cardinal), Indiana state flag and Indianapolis city flag are now classics.

And...I have a signed print of that illustration he did (a la Saul Steinberg) of Indianapolis and the world on my wall.

One always wonders with John: what went wrong? Was there anything any one of us could have done?
