Get your gardening fix

Dateline: Sat 14 Mar 2009

Former Star reporter and current Star gardening columnist Jo Ellen Meyers Sharp keeps digging up the dirt; her latest venture is a blog called Hoosier Gardener, That's also the name of her Saturday column in the newspaper's features section.

The blog's mission is to provide "an informed, yet personal take on natural gardening in Indiana and other dirty topics."

The blog was formerly a website, but she's jazzed it up to include "regular updates on garden-related matters, monthly checklists for landscaping chores and frequently, Web extras with additional or more comprehensive information to complement the Hoosier Gardener

columns in the Indianapolis Star. The columns also are posted there."

Among her current tidbits: "the famous Irwin Home and Gardens in Columbus have been placed on the market by the family, and ... flower and garden shows are growing out of favor in several communities, including Boston and Seattle," according to the New York Times. Oh, and she despises Daylight Savings Time, the bane of every gardener who likes to putter around during spring's early morning light.

Jo Ellen was at the Indianapolis Star from 1981 to 1997. She was on the state desk for three years and then covered various beats: higher education, business and general assignment.

A side note: during her time at the paper, she was also active in the Indianapolis Guild, serving as secretary and working to negotiate two contracts. "What an experience those were." Just like today....
