Jerry Lyst dies

Dateline: Sun 21 Jun 2009

John H. "Jerry" Lyst, a former editor at the Indianapolis Star, died Saturday of pancreatic cancer.

Jerry was a dear man, and more. "He was always a voice of reason and calm at the Star. A gentle man and great colleague," notes a former reporter who worked with him.

He was a thoroughly decent person: fair, principled and thoughtful. And he was kind -- an attribute that sometimes tended to get lost in the daily busyness of putting out a newspaper, under deadline pressure.

Jerry retired from the Star at the age of 66 in 2000.  He had spent 45 years working at the paper, as a business editor, editorial page editor and reporter.

This is very sad. He was a wonderful man and a fair editor. Wonder if there's anyone left at the Star who remembers him?

Through the years at whatever desk he worked, Jerry was invariably thoughtful and kind. He had good manners and good judgement. I am glad he had years of happy sailing.

I still have a nice gold Cross pen with the INI logo on it that Jerry gave me in 1992 when he was visiting The Star's Washington bureau.

Jerry always impressed me as a fair and smart guy who was always pleasant. When our paths would cross at The Star, I was always impressed that he had read my most recent story because he frequently commented on it.

It seems obvious that Jerry Lyst was invested in the newspaper, its stories and above all its people in ways that are now ancient history. He took a personal interest; he was kind and compassionate and even of temper.
You all have said it so well, already. Thanks for taking the time to recall a good and decent newspaperman.

That is so sad. Jerry was a classy gentleman and always had something kind, positive and encouraging to say -- even to those of us not in the newsroom. If you hear anything about funeral services, would you post it?

Jerry's calling is 1-5 Sunday at Leppert Mortuary in Nora. Funeral is Monday at Second Presbyterian Church. Noon, I think.
