Layoffs Thursday

Dateline: Wed 08 Jul 2009

If you're not on Facebook, you may not know: Star Guild member/leader Vic Ryckaert just posted on his page:

"Layoffs announced tomorrow, not today. Just get it over already."

Am I the only former employee who dreamed about this (again) last night? Newspapers haunt my dreams...

Newspapers haunt my dreams, too. Seven years after I left The Star, in my sleep I can conjure up the dread of missing deadline, the frustration of needing that one last phone call, the short-lived joy of a page one above-the-fold Sunday piece.

I know too well how my own persona and that of so many of my colleagues were intertwined with journalism. I am not sure this ever really leaves any of us who lived and breathed the business.

Amen to all that.
Last night (in my latest dream) I was trying to help a young fresh-faced golden-haired reporter. Her name was Sharon Theobold, and she was trying to get to a job interview for a newspaper. She had this huge heavy cart made of marble that she was lugging with her; it had all her clips in it...I tried to lift it to help her get to the interview, but it took two people. We were on a street of lost dreams...I think Elvis was there, too.

Yeah, I do the dream thing, too ( about my 25-year newspaper career). Except I would describe them as "nightmares."

Anal-retentive copy editors; butt-protecting editors; newsroom "management" who couldn't write a lick and could care less about rewarding the talents of skilled writers/journalists.

When I wake up, I am always relieved that I am no longer in this particular field of endeavor. Sorry, it's not a religion to me and never was.

Gannett Blog has a comment saying that the layoffs are starting. Anyone have any info?

I'll try to keep pace with news of more layoffs tomorrow.
In the meantime, happy dreams -- or rather, bad nightmares.
(love the comment about butt-protecting editors...)
