Sweet victory

Dateline: Wed 05 Nov 2008

Watching the results come in last night, after working at School 15 in Center Township on vote collection, was a gratifying and once-in-a-lifetime experience.

As Barack Obama graciously said, the victory belongs to all of us. So many people worked so hard, and the end result is a fulfilling and unprecedented sense of unity and purpose.

Please don't tell me the president-elect lacks experience, as I heard from a Republican spoiler yesterday. Obama's get-out-the-vote effort was, as another friend and veteran community worker said, the most organized and effective campaign she has ever seen. The guy can deliver.

It may sound corny, but a lot of credit in this election win goes to that heady blend of youth and minorities. We raised the kids right; they did the right thing, and they understood what was at stake in this race.

My only regret is that I cried so hard last night, I'm not sure the eye surgeon will be able to peel off my bad cornea today. But mercifully, there are other ways to see the light.
