Only in Indiana....

Dateline: Tue 12 Aug 2008

Reader/commenter Hendy send a great piece from the Los Angeles Times, originally printed in the Chicago Tribune, about a conservative coffee house in Crown Point, Indiana.

Here is the link:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-coffeehouse_31jul31,0,7930045.story

The story line goes like this:

Dave Beckham of Crown Point -- a former art teacher, yet --- was weary of Starbucks in his neck of the woods, NW Indiana. He was turned off by the high-end flavored faux coffees, the folk music, the IPod user scene -- so he decided to cater to his own kind of people. Hence the Conservative Cafe features Fox News, Ann Coulter books and T-shirts (for sale) that say "Zip It Hippie." The motto is "coffee served the right way."

Excerpts from the story:

"'Coffee shouldn't be about sitting in a cafe for 12 hours,' Beckham said. "Coffee gets us through our workday. It's what we drink before we make steel for the rest of the country or head out into the fields."

"His disdain for the coffee chains coincided with his fear of an erosion in national pride, so Beckham made plans to build an old-fashioned java joint near the Crown Point town square."

Beckham's principle is that "Nobody is going to bad-mouth America in here." (There goes the free speech....)

He opened in fall of 2007, he has yet to collect a paycheck along with fellow owner/partner Bill McCall, (a Democrat!), but he's apparently having a pretty good time.

Customer Matthew McPhee is also down with the concept, as quoted in the Trib.

"'I like it here,' he said. 'I don't have to worry about listening to beatnik poetry or some political ideology that makes me want to vomit.'"

I'm curious if any readers have ever been to the joint or seen stories elsewhere. I Googled it, and it showed up on a Dem Party blogger's site last fall. Looks like the Chi Trib was the first big paper to write about it. Since the LATimes has picked up the piece (published July 31 in the Trib) can the Star be far behind?

Anyhow, it's a fresh marketing concept, and in these lean times, we're all about that. Good luck, and don't choke on the brew....
