Like selling off an old, tired horse....

Dateline: Wed 23 May 2007

It's old news but Gannett is unloading four newspapers, including the Marion Chronicle Tribune in Grant County. The plucky little paper, in an economically depressed region, was a prize-winner, although under Gannett it was always lightweight and a breezy read.

Here's a line from the story that appeared Monday in the Chronicle Tribune about Gannett's decision:

"Gannett completed a deal May 7 that sent four other newspapers to GateHouse Media for $410 million, including the Norwich Bulletin in Connecticut; the Rockford Register Star in Illinois; the Observer-Dispatch in Utica, N.Y.; and The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, W. Va."

It's all about the money, folks. The idea of sending four newspapers to GateHouse Media sounds like sending once proud thoroughbreds to the glue factory

To quote the late playwright William Saroyan: "No foundation, all the way down the line."
