To hell with predictions and all that....

Dateline: Sun 31 Dec 2006

On New Year's Eve 1963, finally liberated by an alcoholic drink that was concocted and made briefly fashionable by the Beatles ("Cokies" -- scotch and Coca-Cola) I found myself crawling out of the deep freeze of grief imposed by the murder of John F. Kennedy and drunkenly alternately weeping and wishing the following a Happy New Year:

Peter Pan, James Barrie, J.D. Salinger, Holden Caulfield, the 1964 class of Concordia Lutheran High School, Marjorie Morningstar, Donald Duck, Manhattan, the state of Israel, Kristine Olson, M. Grant, Rick Keltsch, my dead father and "all the drunk old journalists."

Not much has changed, except to add a very happy New Year to all sober journalists as well. That includes reporters and staff at the Indianapolis Star and those of you in the new media who have posted with passion and honesty and vigor on this and other blogs and in alternative newspapers. You made 2006 bearable. in 2007!

God bless us one and all!
