Does Barbie wear a fur coat????

Animal-lover and PETA supporter Walfredo de Freitas says Susan Bayh wears fur. And how, we wonder, will a fur-bearing wifey play out politically in Evan/Ken's bid for the big house?

De Freitas, whose tireless anti-fur crusade has resulted in plenty of ruffled feathers, let PETA international know of his concerns. Last March, PETA boss lady Ingrid E. Newkirk sent the following letter to Susan Bayh:

"Dear Mrs. Bayh:

"On behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA) more than 1 million members and supporters worldwide, including thousands in Indiana, I wish to express my disappointment in hearing from local members that you are still wearing real animal fur."

Newkirk went on to graphically explain the cruelty imposed on animals by humans who want their fur for frivolity. She included a video from fashion designer Stella McCartney documenting abuse at a Midwestern fur farm.

DeFreitas said Mrs. Bayh never replied and the senator's office sent a "sleazy" answer.

To some, this may seem like zilch, but deFreitas, executive director of the Indiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, is not to be trifled with. His complaints in the past about Dress for Success and the Jewish Community Center using fur in fashion shows or auctions met with results. He won.

Besides all that, Mrs. Bayh has some other baggage -- newspaper accounts a while back reported that she was rude to staff at a restaurant in the Washington area. Then, she and Evan reportedly once stood up the former prez of IU, Myles Brand and his wife, for Thanksgiving dinner -- they simply did not show.

OK, Cheri Daniels is fair game (and wasn't very gracious when Mitch was running). So is Susan Bayh. No wonder people avoid politics.
