Putnam County suicides

Dateline: Fri 01 Dec 2006

A front-page story in the Banner-Graphic newspaper in Putnam County reports on a recent suicide: a 46-year-old man, apparently in poor health, who had been asked to leave a "friend's" house, checked into a motel, took Rx drugs and jumped off the balcony.

The article concludes that there have been more suicides this year in Putnam -- 10 or 11 -- than any other year.

A premise: as plants close, health care is denied, marriages fall apart, etc., the suicide rate will rise. Wonder what the trends are for Indiana overall.
